A few years ago, when visiting friends in southern California, we took a trip to the beach. We brought fishing gear with us not expecting to do much of it, but hoped for the chance. Well, we got the chance and spent most of the afternoon surf fishing.
Honestly, I didn’t think it would be as fun as fly fishing Montana rivers, but I was too quick to judge. The best part of surf fishing is that it’s easy and it’s fun for the whole family. While fishing we found sand crabs, watched other guys reel in odd looking fish (and squid), and my son got to see all of it. It was a great learning experience for both of us. Afterwards, I was hooked. Every time we were at or near a beach I had to keep trying this new way to fish. I even spent a few days surf fishing in Hawaii, learning from locals about all the fish along the Maui coast. If you are interested in learning about surf fishing the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is holding a virtual event on April 16th all about it. It’s geared towards beginners and will feature two anglers/environmental scientists that will teach about catching halibut and other species in the surf. To register you can find the link here.

There are two common knots used in fly fishing to make tapered leaders. One is the blood knot and the other is the surgeon. Each knot has its own advantages. The Advantages of the Blood KnotThere are two reasons fly fishers use a blood knot for tapered leaders.
The one disadvantage for some is that the blood knot can be difficult to tie, especially in cold conditions or with the loss of dexterity in the fingers. Loss of dexterity is one of the main reasons we invented the blood knot tool. The Advantages of the Surgeon’s KnotThe surgeon’s knot is often used in place of a blood knot for tapered leaders. The advantage of using the surgeon’s knot is that for many it’s easier to tie.
Although the surgeon knot does well in place of the blood knot there are few reasons we think it’s inferior to use.
Honestly, either knot works for its intended purpose. We just think the blood knot has more advantages, plus our tool makes blood knots easier to tie. So there would be no reason not to use the blood knot. If you need help with tying your blood knot let the Angler’s Ace Blood Knot tool help you.
