The United States is home to some of the best spots for fly fishing in the world. Here are five states that are considered the best places to fly fish from our own experience and from stories we have heard from angler friends.

  1. Montana - Montana is considered the mecca of fly fishing with its numerous rivers, streams, and lakes, making it one of the best places to fly fish in the United States. The state has an abundance of cold, clear water, making it the perfect habitat for trout. It's also where the Angler's Ace blood knot tool is founded, so we are little biased with this selection. Plus we can walk out our back door and fish in the beautiful waters of the Missouri River.
  2. Wyoming - Wyoming has some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the country, with the Snake River being one of its most popular spots. The river is home to a variety of fish, including rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, making it a top destination for fly fishing enthusiasts. It's also right next door to Montana, so the opportunities for fly fishing are limitless. We suggest doing an entire summer trip exploring these two states.
  3. Colorado - Colorado is famous for its Rocky Mountain streams and rivers that offer some of the best fly fishing in the country. The state has a variety of water systems, from high mountain streams to large tailwaters, making it a top destination for all types of fly fishing.
  4. Alaska - Alaska is considered one of the best places to fly fish due to its diverse opportunities and abundant fish populations. With its clear, cold water, Alaska is home to some of the largest salmon in the world, making it a top destination for salmon fishing. We have yet to make this trip, but have heard amazing experiences from friends.
  5. New Mexico - New Mexico has a variety of fly fishing opportunities, from high-mountain streams to desert rivers, making it a top destination for anglers. The state is home to a variety of fish, including rainbow and brown trout, as well as several species of bass, making it a great place to fish for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Whether you're looking for clear mountain streams, big tailwaters, or diverse fishing opportunities, these five states offer something for everyone. If you decided to try one of these destinations we'd love to hear about it. Oh, and don't forget to bring your blood knot tool because I have a feeling you might be tying a lot of blood knots fishing in these states.
